Challenge Level

The terrain vastly varies across the 4 mountains at Aspen. The easy-going terrain at Buttermilk is perfect for beginners while Snowmass features a better mix of terrain to suit all abilities. Aspen Mountain is truly an expert's playground - the terrain is steep with large rocks and cliffs to launch off while you weave between the trees while the Highlands Bowl at Aspen Highlands is truly unmissable for the adventurous skiers! Neither offer beginner runs.

Things To Do

There are endless activities here. Aspen is notoriously known for its vibrant nightlife so you know where non-skiers will be at night. Other activities include:

  • Alpine Coaster
  • Ice Skating
  • Snow Biking
  • Snowshoeing
  • Tubing
  • Yoga Classes

Accessibility

Flying into Aspen/ Pitkin County Airport is the most convenient way to getting here, located just 10 minutes drive or less to the mountains. Some hotels may even include complimentary transfers. Aspen/Pitkin County Airport services flights mostly from United Airlines but also from American Airlines and Delta. Alternatively, Denver International Airport is further, however services more and generally cheaper flights. If you're not up for the drive, the Epic Mountain Express shuttle can take you to Aspen; though their estimated travel time is approximately 4.5 hours.

Recommended Airport:

  • Aspen/ Pitkin County Airport 8 miles (15 minute drive)
  • Denver Intl. Airport 220 miles (4 hour drive)

When To Go

February is the best month to visit Aspen for less crowds and great snow. Ski season on Aspen Mountain generally begins in late November during Thanksgiving weekend and goes through late March - sometimes stretching into April. The crowds start flooding in Christmas week and the party continues until the end of January as the town comes alive for the Wintersköl festival and the X Games. But if you’re only there for the mountain, the slopes are deserted during the X Games though it’s still considered peak season for lodging. If you’re a powder hound, the best months to ski or ride Aspen Mountain are December, January and February. That said, March and April are Colorado’s snowiest months, so even if you arrive late in the season there are still freshies to go around – though the snow tends to be a little heavier, turning into compact powder near the tail end of the season. For a good balance of sun, snow and quiet, February is good bet!
